MARRAKECH MOOD

Marrakech is a design mecca that we’ve loved for decades and on our recent trip to the Moroccan city we discovered plenty of new inspiration amid some old favourites

MARRAKECH MOOD

I hadn’t been to Marrakech for 15 years, but it’s a city that’s stayed close to my heart. And why not? Everywhere you glance in that charming town you see beauty: on the walls, the terraces, the tiled roofs. So when I had the chance to spend a long weekend there during my recent trip to Europe, I jumped at the opportunity–with a couple of teenage boys in tow.

Unbeknowst to them, I had a secret plan to visit the new Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Designed by French architects Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier of Studio KO, it’s a fitting tribute to YSL, featuring sublime design and subtle nods to the great designer’s legendary love affair with Marrakech. From the the pink brick façade that evokes woven fabric, to the velvety smoothness of the interior, every detail was superbe

If you –like me– can’t get enough of Studio KO’s aesthetic, you must not miss the stunning Riad Dixneuf Laksour. An understated yet luxurious haven, it comprises six bedrooms decked out with vintage pieces, earthy tones and beautiful textures. And the food...

Yet perhaps the most inspiring of all, to me at least, are the streets and the Medina. Terracotta tones are everywhere, from rugs to jugs, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to bring everything ochre-hued home in your hand luggage. What is is about those sunset tones? Well, I believe it subtly anchors the heart and home with the earth, and these rich natural colours are the perfect way to raise the cosy factor in your home.

So how do you make it work without it looking cheesy? That’s easy: team those colours with natural textures, like wood and rattan; a touch of edge courtesy of black or khaki brings it up to the minute, and a subtle splash of brass or gold to finish illuminates the whole combination beautifully.

Just have a look at how Maison de Vacances does it in their latest range - very boho chic a la francaise. Keep an eye out for my newsletter –it has all the details.

In the meantime, a little list of must-dos in the Medina from my last visit, for your next visit…

  • La Famille. The sister of chic French designers Honore Deco has opened this sweet little vegan canteen (and a little corner shop). The whole family is fan of earthy tones: note the Gold Croisette chair!
  • La terrace des epices. Beautiful views of Marrakech roofs, plus lovely little shops just below the terrace. How handy!
  • Nomad restaurant. One of the hottest spots in town, don’t miss the rooftop terrace and cute shop for trinkets to take home.
  • Le Jardin café/restaurant. A green oasis that sells stylish Norya Ayron jet-set bohemian tunics and caftans in the shop on the first floor.
  • VB store. French designer Valerie Barkowski presents her eponymous collection of  beautiful textiles, cushions, lighting… not to be missed.
